The Queens of the Parody

I know that you’ll agree with me that Weird Al Yankovic is the King of the Parody but I think I’ve found the Queens. There are plenty of people who make parodies on YouTube. Some are decidedly brilliant and some...well some tend to be hit or miss.

The Hillywood Show is comprised of sisters Hilly and Hannah Hindi who are, in my personal opinion, incredibly talented. Not only do they write their own lyrics they design costumes, do make up, direct, act, sing, dance... I mean, they are more than a triple threat. I’m almost positive that they have more talent in one hand that I have in my entire being.

I first heard about The Hillywood Show around the release of the first Hunger Games film. I was actually looking for resources on YouTube as I had been teaching the novel and had taken a class to see the film when I stumbled upon their Hunger Games parody. Not only was it a fun parody it was highly polished and incredibly well done. The attention to detail, alone, was enough for me to subscribe.

Over the years they have parodied such classic shows and films as Doctor Who, Sherlock, Hocus Pocus and Suicide Squad. Each one done with precision and skill, no detail too small, and no idea too outlandish. All you have to do is look at the costuming involved in the Hocus Pocus parody to know how talented these two are.

Of course, I have my favourites. The two that come to mind are:

The Supernatural parody done to the tune of “Shake it Off” by Taylor Swift.

And, the most recent parody, Stranger Things done to the tune of “Super Freak” by Rick James.

I have to warn you, they are addictive parodies and I couldn’t tell you what the original words to either song actually are. Not that I find that to be a bad thing.

The Hindi sisters have gone from strength to strength with their parodies, showing a unique style of directing and a keen eye for detail. They also do behind the scenes vlogs, have a Patreon, merch and so much more.

They have over a million subscribers but deserve so many more. Honestly, I have shown their parodies in class, to friends, to anyone who will listen. I am incredibly impressed by their skill and their poise. They are truly lovely people who do this because they love it and that’s what makes them great.

Long live the Queens of YouTube parodies!

Do you have any parody channels that you think I need to check out? Let me know. Leave a comment.
