Diary of Armageddon: Day One

Writer's picture: AnnaAnna

This past weekend was the Wellington Armageddon Expo and I have so much to report back on that this post will be in three parts for each day that I was there.

I have been amped for this day for months and it has finally arrived, Armageddon, well, the Wellington Expo that is.

I checked and triple-checked I had packed everything and that all my devices were charged up and ready to go.

Woke bright and early to catch my flight and arrived safely in Wellington at about 9. The expo didn’t officially open its doors till noon, so I had plenty of time to cruise the shops and get to the venue.

I chose to stay at the Waterloo Backpackers and Hotel based on a recommendation from a fellow nerd and I am so glad I did as it was only 5 minutes from the arena.

I stowed my travel bag in the locker for the day and headed to the venue at about 11 and there was already a large crowd waiting.

The crowd was building, and the anticipation was high as we got through the gates. Unfortunately, we all had to stand in the hot sun of the day. It was so great to see so many people there, my people! So many cosplayers – shout out to the guy dressed as Riker from Star Trek who had the great forethought to bring a collapsible chair with him!

All the people with Premium/Gold passes were then corralled into another line right by the door so we could get in 10 minutes earlier (woohoo).

As soon as the doors opened we raced to get our passes and start our expo adventure.

First on my pre-planned schedule was to get my photo with Kim Rhodes and DJ Qualls from Supernatural, but this wasn’t until 2.10 so I had time to kill to browse and buy.

I am always amazing at the selection of stalls at these expos, from trading cards and swords to t-shirts and movie make-up. I confess that I spent way too much money (my first purchase being Totoro socks!).

I am so pleased that I got my Premium Pass as it gave me so much awesome quick access to things, like being at the front of the line for my Kim and DJ photo.

Kim is amazing. We were all waiting as DJ was late, so she came out and said hello to us all. The funniest moment was when she spotted someone dressed as Deadpool, grabbed him by the hand and dragged him inside the booth for a photo. Too cute!

Finally, DJ showed up and my photo was taken – Kim even called me sweetheart!

Next was the Supernatural Panel at 3pm with DJ and Kim which was hilarious to say the least and I loved DJ’s “Worst Game Show in The World” (which is a combination of a raffle and ‘What’s in DJ’s Bag’).

I have only just started watching Supernatural this year so I haven’t much of these two in action, but after meeting them in person I am already a huge fan.

The only difficulty with the setup of the Main Stage at the Arena was that it was outside in the stands and there was a lot of echoey feedback from the mics. I got used to it though and it was well worth it.

After that I picked up my photo and wandered aimlessly through the crowds, taking photos and videos and buying more stuff before heading back to the motel for a well-earned rest.
