I have crushed on Ryan Reynolds ever since I saw him as the lovable Berg in Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place back in 1998-2001 (which also starred a young Nathan Fillion.)
Seeing him transform all these years later into kick ass superhero Deadpool is amazing and perfect.
This sequel is bigger, bloodier, gorier and just as hilarious as the first. Yes, it’s more violent, but what do you expect from a superhero who cannot and will not die?
Packed with so many pop-culture references (from Frozen and Yentl to even Avengers Infinity War), as well references to Dubstep,The Goonies - and yes, he again pokes fun at himself from his Green Lantern days.
There were some outstanding cameos (oh hello Brad Pitt), and the laughter just did not stop - what other superhero movie would include a song from Annie during a fight sequence
The film follows Deadpool as he meets Russell (aka Fire Fist) who lives in an orphanage where he is subjected to torturous ‘therapy’ in order to cleanse him of his mutant abilities. Upon trying to save him from killing, they both end up in a mutant prison in which Russell becomes the target of Cable - a genetically enhanced soldier from the future. In order to save Russell he joins forces with a bad of fellow misfits/superheros to create X-Force (including Domino, Shatterstar, The Vanisher and Brian) to protect Russell from Cable and get his ‘heart in the right place’
Side note:- Can someone please get Domino has own movie - this girls kicks ass!!
And of course not forgetting the return of the ever moody Negasonic Teenage Warhead and introducing her girlfriend Yukio (“Hi Yukio”).
It was so amazing to see young Kiwi actor Julian Dennison (from Hunt for the Wilderpeople), as Russell/Fire Fist. It was kind of strange to hear the Kiwi accent in such a big movie, but he clearly has a big future ahead of him in the movie industry.
The things that stood out to me most in this movie was not only the pop culture references, or the sometimes self deprecating humor, but also the soundtrack (Dolly Parton, Celine Dion, Skrillex and AC/DC to many just a few) - these are now downloaded to my Spotify account.
This has got to be Ryan’s best movie to date. He is born for this role and I hope he continues to bring Deadpool to life (and death) for many more years to come.
I personally prefer this movie to its predecessor in the fact it was (in my opinion) funnier, more gruesome and alot more action packed with some great characters that I hope to see again, and again.
In conclusion, if you are fan of the first Deadpool then you will no doubt love his return - just make sure you stay for the credit scenes.
