Black Panther: Review

Warning: This blog contains spoilers

As you all know, I am a MASSIVE fan of Marvel and this year is going to be extremely epic with at least 5 movies coming out this year (check out the release calendar here).

This weekend I went to see the much-anticipated Black Panther and I can honestly say that it was indeed worth all the hype surrounding it (it has currently made $361 million worldwide on its opening debut). The cast was perfect, the costumes were superb and well, here is my review:

The movie takes place just after the events of Marvel's Captain America: Civil War - King T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns home to the hidden, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country's new king after the tragic death of his Father. Upon his return, he learns that black-market arms dealer Klaue (played expertly by Gollum himself, Andy Serkis) is in possession of some of Wakanda’s highly powered material (vibranium). He teams up with Okoye (Danai Guirra), and his former lover turned Wakandan secret agent Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), to track him down once and for all. However, it turns out the bigger enemy is actually a mask wearing Eric “Killmonger” Stevens (Michael B. Jordan), a determined man with a mysterious past who has big plans that not only threaten T’Challa’s reign as king, but the very future of Wakanda itself.

“Powerful, poignant, and inspiring. Every character stands out as complex and so real”- Jaime

The casting is phenomenal with a star-studded line-up including Angela Bassett (Ramonda), Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia) and Forest Whittaker. It is also packed with some kick ass females – from Danai Gurira (Oyoke) to the smart-ass tech genius Letitia Wright (Shuri). Chadwick Boseman as the Black Panther is genius, as is Michael B Jordan.

“It was beautiful, thoughtful and thought provoking. More than just another “superhero movie”. - Deanna

The fight scenes are (as expected with Marvel movies) spectacular. They are fast paced and full of heart-stopping moments and surprises (like war rhinos).

Costume Designer Ruth E. Blair should hopefully be an Oscar contender for her gorgeous multicolored African/futuristic blend aesthetic. Not to mention Rachel Morrision’s captivating cinematography.

In short, Black Panther deals with some very real and serious topics but is also a highly entertaining action-packed movie with an action hero with awesome gadgets and a super cool suit (oh, and war rhinos). It kicks some serious ass and helps introduce audiences to a new cast that will likely become vital when Thanos eventually strolls into town for Avengers: Infinity War.

I can honestly say that the women of Black Panther stole the show in this movie and I really hope that the rumors are true of there being an all female Marvel movie coming up in the future.

Have you seen this movie? What are your thoughts? What Marvel Movie are you looking forward to seeing this year?
