I love to show my nerdiness in different ways - from clothing to jewellery to constant reciting of key phrases that other nerds will pick up on. I’m also a high school teacher which can exclude certain items of clothing - noticeably jeans and tee shirts. We have a semi formal dress code (which is, if I’m honest, not overly fair to female staff...) so I have to work around how I can wear my nerdiness with pride.
My other problem is that I live in New Zealand and we don’t really have the widest array of clothing stores. It’s easy enough to get nerdy or geeky tee shirts from Kmart or The Warehouse or Cotton On but, when it comes to dresses or skirts, I turn to online stores.
The following are some of the sites that I use to get my nerd on...
Mighty Ape is New Zealand’s equivalent to Amazon. It has a great range of all things nerdy and I’ve linked you straight to dresses and skirts.
Pros: It’s in New Zealand so you don’t have to wait long on shipping and the price of shipping is really good. It’s in NZD so you know exactly what you’re paying.
Cons: It’s in NZD which can be a little more expensive.
Still, I find it reliable though I use it mainly for geeky knick knacks and jewellery rather than clothing.
I love Think Geek - especially when I’m at San Diego Comic Con. I love the quirky challenges they have you do to get badges but I also love the fact that they were one of the first stores that I found that would ship to New Zealand.
I bought this Star Trek dress from there and I always get compliments when I wear it.
Pros: They have sales quite frequently and they often do deals on International Shipping. They also have a range of homeware and other neat things.
Cons: It’s in USD and, sometimes, the shipping is a pain. It can take a while to get to New Zealand. (Minor con cause patience...)
I know that there are always a lot of jokes made about Hot Topic but I’ve been in some of the stores and they have some fun stuff! They also have a range of dresses from a range of fandoms - not just your everyday ones!
Pros: Great range from Supernatural to Doctor Who to random bands and more.
Cons: Shipping costs and time. It can also be a little overwhelming navigating their site.
I love Torrid and have bought a fair few dresses from them. They are a plus sized store which is great because nerds of all sizes deserve to have fun clothes. I’m one of those in between/awkward sized people who can wear clothes from size 14 to 18 (NZ sizing) and Torrid has pretty accurate sizing instructions. My favourite purchase has to be a Doctor Who Tardis dress. (See image)
Pros: Great range and they often have sales.
Cons: Same as the other US based stores - pricing, shipping, and wait times for delivery which is just something we kiwis have to deal with.
By one of the ultimate fangirls for fangirls. Created by Ashley Eckstein (the voice of Ahsoka Tano from Star Wars The Clone Wars) Her Universe has a great range of clothing - in fact many of her designs are available in the other stores I have listed.
I have purchased quite a few pieces from this company - mainly when I am at SDCC. My favourite has to be this reversible Wonder Woman dress.
Pros: Made for fangirls with a fun range and new stock being added all the time.
Cons: Can be a little pricey plus shipping.
So there are some of the places that I use to build my work related nerdy clothing. Do you have any recommendations? I’d love to hear about your favourite item of nerd clothing or even some suggestions about how you rock your nerdy style in your workplace!
X Jaime.
